Kahn’s Short List

AUTHOR: Matthew P.C. Holmquist | IN: Timberwolves | COMMENTS: 2 Comments |

After about a month on the job, David Kahn is finally moving down his “to-do” list to something Wolves fans have been speculating on ever since Kevin McHale was given the boot. He is finally putting together a short list of candidates for the coaching search. I use the term “short list” very loosely in this case, because Kahn has once again shown that he doesn’t care much for the traditional approach as he has a list of about 50 people in mind. No, that is not a typo. 50 CANDIDATES! I’m not sure whether to be honored, or confused that his list includes my grandmother. I understand why he would like to make sure he looks at every possible candidate, but this seems to be a little ridiculous. Usually a short list means a list that goes to a maximum of 15 candidates. Maximum being the key word. Once again, ridiculous.

I’ve heard a few names being tagged with the title “next Wolves coach” (just say a name, it’s probably on the list), and seemingly on every list is ABC/ESPN analyst and retired point guard Mark Jackson. I don’t think a rookie coach is really what this team needs, but having a past player be the lead guy is something I (and Ricky Rubio) both think is a major plus in today’s NBA. They seem to be more in touch with their players, and if they played well enough when they were in the NBA, they seem to command a lot of respect from their players.

Other confirmed candidates for the position:
Monty Williams- Portland assistant
Bill Lambier – WNBA coach
Kurt Rambis – former Laker player / assistant coach (known for getting clotheslined by McHale)
Brian Shaw – former Laker player / assistant coach
Matt’s Grandmother – native Minnesotan, knows the right ingredients
