Alright, this may not be about our Wolves team, but this story is so mind boggling amazing, I had to comment on it. Allen Iverson, Mr. Practice has gone from being a $21 million a year player to a man that settled for a one year deal worth $3.5 million. Not only is this a huge pay cut from the team, but his endorsements are way down as well. When is the last time you saw Iverson’s clothing line in Foot Locker? Probably 2 years ago. Now he can’t even get a winning team to take him for the minimum. Enough of my amazement at the downfall of a player that should have been a wolf (man did I want him here with KG when the Sixers were shopping him and all we had to do to get him was give up Foye) lets talk about how this effects the Grizzlies.
Last year they had a rookie (Mayo) who took most of their shots and a small forward that wanted the ball more often in Gay. This off season, to solve their problems, they took on a career black hole in Randolph, and now signed another, significantly larger, black hole in Iverson. That is three ball hogs and a guy that’s willing to pass, but doesn’t necessarily want to. Wow. It will be a fun season in Memphis. Their starting 5 is now completely ruined, with the signing of A.I. Do you start A.I. or Mayo? Do you play Mayo at PG and then hope Conley’s growth isn’t stunted too much this year while getting limited playing time? Or maybe you take A.I. off the bench and hope he doesn’t ruin your locker room like he did in Detroit last year. Worst case scenario, you take your streaky shooting draft pick from the year before, and hurt his growth by putting him in limited minutes off the bench.
Don’t even mention how quick their possessions will be now that everyone on the team knows they won’t get the ball back if they pass it to any of their three hogs. I’m thinking highest opponent PPG in the league. By 10 points.
Will be fun to see how it turns out in Memphis this year. At least it’s something to take your mind off how bad the Wolves record is in February.
