Carney Signs With 76ers

by Timberwolves

On Tuesday, the 76ers stole what many thought was the Wolves’ last move of the summer by signing Rodney Carney to a 1 year deal. Before the summer started, we knew the current state of the economy as well as the impending changes to the CBA in 2010 would hurt players’ chances to get the types of contracts that they would have previously gotten in prior offseasons. After a summer filled with his agent fishing for offers, Carney finally signed the only amount he was offered by any team. The league minimum aka $855,189. All summer it has been spectated that the most likely scenerio was a return to Carney’s former team, but no one expected that former team to be the 76ers.

Carney is now going from a team that needs more SG/SF’s to a team that is fully equipped at those positions. He will now be behind the former Arizona Wildcat (have to throw in my former college) Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young, Willie Green, and Jason Kapono. The only player on that list that isn’t still exponentially improving their game every year is Kapono. Playing time will be minimum, and the pay is minimum, so it is an odd signing on all accounts.

I wish the best to Carney, he gave his all while he was here, and he really did show some great promise under McHale last year. Hopefully he can take his game to the next level in the near future.
