Craig Brackins Scouting Report

Name: Craig Brackins
Ht: 6’10″ Wt: 230
Pos: PF Class: Jr
College: Iowa State

Overview: Craig Brackins is a classic case of a kid who has been over evaluated. He has been around three years thus giving scouts time to pick apart his game way too much. Scout no longer cares about his athleticism, the fact he is an above average runner for a big man, can rebound well do to his long arms, and he can flat out shoot the ball. Instead the scouts like the guys who they feel they can still project (i.e. Greg Monroe, Derrick Favors, Ed Davis, Stanley Robinson, etc.). Well I will tell you this; he is much better than all of those guys right now. So scouts can attempt to project these guys and attempt to guess whether they will be good, bad, or great, but that is how you end up drafting Darko ahead of 4 future all stars or Marvin Williams ahead of two franchise changing point men. So me, I will stick with the player who is better prepared to make an impact now.

Strengths: Craig’s shot is his best asset. He can rain down jumpers for a big fella. He has a very nice back to the basket game and can drain the turn around jumper as far out as 15 feet. He is a good athlete with long arms. He has good enough foot speed to cover other athletic bigs (especially in transition) but will never be a lock down defender. He can handle the ball fairly well and can dish it out of the post. All of those things combined will make him a tough cover in the pros.

Weaknesses: He needs to get stronger for sure. Stronger players will push him around and take advantage of him in the post. Much like many other athletic power forwards (Amare, Shareef, Rashard, and Beasley) with regards to his D he likely will not be a strong defender in the league. He is a good athlete but not elite. He will not play above the rim. His jumper has been a little bit more inconsistent this year but when it is on, he can light up the scoreboard. Not very many weaknesses but his strength is a big concern until he adds more muscle.

Comparable: Shareef Abdur-Rahim
