The Minnesota Lynx came through with a Game 2 WNBA Finals victory last night in front of a frenzied crowd at Target Center. The team is now one win away from the franchise’s first title, and the Timberwolves should be taking note. The Twin Cities meto area (aka Loserville, USA capital of 2011) is absolutely starving for a winner, and the Lynx appear to giving them a taste of what they want.
Although what looks like an inevitable title for the city, it’s safe to say the vast majority of fans want even more. The WNBA has failed to crack the sports mainstream attention of the average sports fan. The city needs one of the big four (Vikings, Twins, Timberwolves, Wild) to step back into relevence.
The one thing the Lynx have done that the Timberwolves haven’t is sign key veteran contributers. Both teams have had several Top 10 draft picks, but the Timberwolves have yet to make a big veteran aquisition under General Manager David Kahn. Kahn has proved he can provide additional draft picks, hair gel, and outlandish quotes. But, can he make the one trade or sign the one free agent that puts the team over the top? A move like this could end up saving his job. The Lynx aquired Lindsay Whalen this season, and she provided a big boost in running the show for the team (1st team All-WNBA). It will be interesting to see if the Timberwolves can add the lead guard they’ve desperately needed for a long, long time. We have the apparent point guard of the future, but the team does need a true lead guard no matter if it comes from the point guard or shooting guard.
Regardless of what David Kahn’s next mad scientist manuever is…we do know that last night’s Target Center crowd was electric. Can you imagine if the Timberwolves passed 30 wins in 2012, and approached challenging for a playoff spot in the Western Conference? This town is so anxious for a winner, and the Timberwolves have been so bad for such a long time….it would be like Hoosiers! Pathetic as that may be, we all know it’s true here in Loserville, USA.
