GameNotes: Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Dallas Mavericks

Quarter 1

  • Wolves will take on a healthier Dallas team with Dirk Nowitzki starting to regain his form. While there is a pretty large record disparity between the two teams, there isn’t that much difference in terms of talent level.
  • An injury report about all the casualties of this season so far will be up tomorrow.
  • Wolves will have to attempt to use their bench to win this game. In the previous 2 games, the injuries have really worn down on the shortened rotations. Adelman’s absence is also hurting the team.
  • As much as I love Cunningham, a better choice might be Derrick Williams. DC’s flaws are more readily exposed during extended minutes.
  • Wolves coming out sluggish as their defense is surrendering far to many easy, open looks.
  • They quickly find themselves in a 16-7 deficit.
  • Ridnour is really struggling in this ball game. Darren Collison is blowing by him easily on defense, and his jumper is looking shaky at best. Might be time for an early dose of JJ Barea.
  • Cunningham’s jumper is really looking flawed right now. Teams are more than happy to allow Cunningham to pop that midrange shot.
Quarter 2
  • Rubio is slowly but surely looking more and more like his old self every passing game. Pretty soon, the minutes restrictions are going to be expanded for him.
  • Wolves getting some lucky bounces on their shots to get the score quite a bit closer now. Still a very ugly game.
  • Barea is the only Minnesota player with a working outside shot right now. He might be able to single handedly pull us through this game.
  • Wolves scoring these last few games seem to have been free throws and offensive rebounds. Not a good idea when you don’t have talent to make open jumpers.
  • Rubio has absolutely zero confidence in his shot. He just missed a wide open bunny that the big man wasn’t about to contest.
  • Wolves staying in this game down by 3, 39-36. A couple lucky shots have kept them in this game while the Mavericks are fouling at a high rate.
  • Shawn Marion could be a great player comparison for Derrick Williams as he ages. Marion has had a borderline Hall of Fame career while playing alongside some great point guards.
  • Dallas starting to pull away as Elton Brand is making the Wolves pay for double teaming Nowitzki.
  • The Elton Brand Show continues as he exploits the Wolves and puts the Mavs up by double digits by himself.
Quarter 3
  • D-Will getting some extended burn as Dante Cunningham has already gone 3-13 from the field and that was just the first half.
  • For how good his stroke is, Shved is all too inconsistent to be relied upon as a scoring threat. He’s a terrific facilitator but for now, he can’t really put up 20+ points every night.
  • Some positives to take out of that disappointing half, Wolves are “only” down 10, despite getting outshot 58% to 38%.
  • If your getting bored by Minnesota’s ineptitude, go ahead and check out Atlanta’s game. 28 points and they are already half through the 3rd quarter. Ouch.
  • For a player who has a traditionally shaky shot, Darren Collison is really on target tonight.
  • Ridnour really hurting Minnesota tonight. His lack of offensive contributions outweighs his usually horrendous defense. Unfortunately, his shot just isn’t falling.
  • Dallas seems to just hit everything. Players that usually aren’t that talented at shooting are hitting on all cylinders.
