The consensus best passing point guard in the NBA, Ricky Rubio, could be in the market for a backup before the NBA’s trading deadline. Woj says his countryman has the potential to be traded and, as of now, is without a destination. Per RealGM:

The Toronto Raptors to discuss a trade for Rudy Gay, but sources say it is proving difficult to find a third team to acquire Jose Calderon.

The Raptors are reportedly building a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies for Gay around Calderon and Ed Davis.

Calderon is in the final season of his contract.

The Wolves are about to embark on the 2nd half of their season with the 42nd game of the year against the Clippers. Tipping off a 6-game homestand, at the end of which, they will know if they’re in the midst of a resurgence and on their way back to .500 seeking the 8th spot in the playoff race, or succumbing to the weight of their mostly injured roster. Either position will place them firmly in a buyer or seller’s market, determining whether they are interested in a player like JJ Redick, who will be an unrestricted free agent after this year or a player on an existing contract like Courtney Lee, who has 3 years remaining.

 Coincidentally, Joan Niesen reports:
The Minnesota Timberwolves signed center Chris Johnson and forward Mickael Gelabale to 10-day contracts Tuesday. Both players had already been signed to 10-day deals, which expired Monday, on Jan. 19.
In order to sign both players, the team was granted an extension of its injury exception. Gelabale was signed into the 16th roster spot created by the exception, rather than Johnson, who was in the spot for the last contract period.
These contracts cover 5 of 6 games on the Wolves’ homestand. Gelabale will be playing for his NBA career and presumably Lou Amundson’s roster spot.
The interesting thing is the Rudy Gay and Ed Davis trade needing a 3rd team to take on the 10.6 million dollar final contract year of Jose Calderon. The Wolves have more than enough pieces to make such a move work: Derrick Williams is making 4.8 this year. Brandon Roy’s contract isn’t likely to be guaranteed next year (due to him not making his games appearance requirement this season) and he’s got 5.1 on this year. Greg Stiemsma (2.6/2 years) has made himself available after filling in so poorly for Pek the last week. JJ Barea (4.4/3 years) and Luke Ridnour (4/2 years) are always available to be thrown in to balance a trade out.
What market the Wolves are in will be determined in the next 10 days.
