Do you believe in bad omens? Lady luck? Reading tea leaves? Neither do I, but this tiny tidbit from the other Twin Cities paper looks a little rough.
Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders and restricted free agent center Nikola Pekovic did not meet in Europe as planned last week, Saunders said Wednesday.
“It was just one of those things that didn’t work out,” Saunders said. “We thought he was going to come in the week prior to July, but he’s pretty much staying out there doing some training, getting ready for the national team.”
Saunders said he did meet with Pekovic’s agent during the trip. Pekovic and Saunders aren’t expected to talk in person before the free agency period begins July 1, according to Saunders.
Pekovic started in all 62 games in which he appeared, and averaged 16.3 points and 8.8 rebounds in 31.6 minutes per game last season. Saunders said previously that he expects Pekovic back next season.
“He knows where we’re at,” he said. “Now it’s just a matter of when the time comes, we’ll sit down and deal with that and go through mostly his agent.”
On its face, it’s a missed connection. If you wanted to be fatalistic about it, it’s not a good sign.
I can’t help but feel this article is a bit incomplete, though. Wouldn’t you like more information about Flip’s meeting with Pek’s agent? Was it coffee, drinks or dinner?
