Kevin Love is committing to play USA basketball. Timberwolves All-Star forward Love announced on Wednesday his commitment to play for Team USA in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup held Aug. 30-Sept. 14, 2014, in Spain.
From the AP:
“Just being part of USA Basketball has meant a lot for my career,” Love said. “I’ve been part of the World Championship team in 2010 and the 2012 Olympic team in London. Just coming off last summer and then heading forward, just being part of the family. Jerry and Coach keep mentioning being part of the USA Basketball family, and heading forward we are looking for bigger and brighter things.”
“Both of them were 21-year-old guys when we won in Istanbul (in 2010), and then at 23 they won Gold Medals,” Krzyzewski said. “They now are the leadership. They are part of the leadership of our program, and they’ve been committed.”
Colangelo made the announcement, noting it’s a big deal having Love and Durant make this early commitment because it sends the message to others in the program who have indicated interest that Team USA is ready to begin focusing toward the next four-year cycle.
Durant said it’s a responsibility he doesn’t take lightly. Being able to represent your country is something you can’t take for granted, he said, so he knew last summer he would be back competing in this 2014 World Cup.
Love agreed, saying the goal for this USA Basketball family is to reach new heights and win another gold.
“That’s what we try to bring home for Team USA,” Love said. “And then just being committed all the way through 2016, I think is very big for us to do that and be here with you guys and look towards the future.”
