Wolves New General Manager: Milt Newton

Post-Flip Saunders return, there were some pie-in-the-sky hopes the rest of Wolves owner Glen Taylor’s comfortable front office would be filled-in with complimentary, forward-thinking hires to balance out the old boys club. Now it seems complete: Flip’s son, coach Rick Adelman’s kids, the old Rob Babcock, and a former co-worker from Flip’s time spent out East.

The news on the new Wolves general manager, via Doogie:

Washington Wizards Vice President of player personnel, Milt Newton, will join the Timberwolves as the team’s general manager, according to a team source. Newton will be heavily involved in pro scouting.

The Wolves also plan on elevating Rob Babcock to a vice president of personnel position.

Both men have a prior history with Wolves President of Basketball Operations, Flip Saunders

Saunders still will have final say in all personnel decisions, but will be leaning heavily on Newton and Babcock on all moves.

Saunders is also said to be taking an assistant trainer, Koichi Sato, from the Wizards. Sato will focus on strength training with the Wolves.

Also, according to Jerry Zgoda, the Wolves are negotiating to hire Bobby Jackson as player development coach.

All of the eye testers would seem better informed with a few measurable statistics providing some context, sure, but then you’d have to have worked with one in the past. Because getting various gangs back together doesn’t happen if you make an outside hire. Nepoticronyism, Wolves-style.
