The rise and fall of Vinny Del Negro and the Wolves’ head coaching vacancy

Well, that escalated quickly. (Before crashing to the ground with enough force to blow out all of the torches that had been lit just moments prior.)

Yes, Vinny Del Negro was a “serious” candidate for the Wolves’ head coaching vacancy for somewhere around an hour this afternoon. The panic began with ESPN’s Marc Stein, and was closely followed by frequent Timberwolves’ fan’s dream killer Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports:

In a strange twist, old friend Jerry Zgoda of the StarTrib stepped in less than a half an hour after the madness began to try and calm the nerves of legions of Wolves’ fans.

Darren Wolfson of ESPN 1500 kept us all worried that Del Negro was indeed one of (or the?!?) “mystery candidate” that he had teased fans about earlier in the morning.

But finally, mercifully, Minneapolis-based A.P. reporter Jon Krawczynski came to the rescue with a pair of tweets that ended the whirlwind of tweets nearly exactly one hour after Stein started the madness.

Ultimately, there was no news to report, other than Del Negro indeed interviewed for the position last week in Cleveland with Flip Saunders. And that’s it. So there’s nothing to worry about, right? An interview doesn’t mean that much. Then again, future Hall-of-Fame coach George Karl hasn’t even garnered an interview, which continues to boggle the mind. Tomorrow is a new day, ripe with possibilities of terrible head coaching options. Until then, enjoy Game 5 of Thunder-Spurs.
