New Wolves at the Minnesota State Fair

A new era of Minnesota Timberwolves basketball has begun.

The trio of Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, and Thaddeus Young was introduced along with the reintroduction of first-round draft pick Zach LaVine at the Minnesota State Fair on Tuesday afternoon.

It certainly seemed to be the perfect way to usher in the new era; is there a more Minnesota-y, common person-y locale than the State Fair? The crowd was large, the weather was beautiful, and it felt fresh and new.

Stock media questions were asked and answered during the relatively short presentation, with the exception of Thad Young’s passionate nod to the lack of playoff appearances for the Wolves organization in the past ten years, stating that it’s been “too long”. To which, of course, the crowd expelled their hearty agreement to the acknowledgement that their newest player was already making.

The Wolves did a good job with the presentation. The excitement has been sufficiently built-up, and now we’re just stuck with a month of waiting until training camp begins, and another month after that before the games count.

One quick aside: the whole #EyesOnTheRise has already gotten a bit out of hand, and the simultaneous reintroduction of LaVine with the haul from the Kevin Love trade is strange, if only because it makes it seem like these four guys are the only players on the squad. Ultimately, I understand the reason (wanting LaVine to feel like he’s part of the new core of the team), but it seems weird.

At some point, Ricky Rubio and Nikola Pekovic will emerge from Europe, and all will be right in the world, but as of right now it’s feeling a bit…abrasive.

That said, I would be lying if I said that yesterday’s press conference of sorts wasn’t exciting.

It was, and this is going to be a fun ride.
