Minnesota Timberwolves’ fans come from all over the globe. We take a look at how some of the Dunking With Wolves’ staff became fans.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are a young team full of potential. In the past, they’ve had times of greatness. The Kevin Garnett era brought the team an MVP and almost a conference title.

Many predict the Timberwolves will soon be making their return to the playoffs and ending their 13 year drought.

But what drew us to the Minnesota Timberwolves?

I posed this question to the writers here at Dunking With Wolves, and compiled the answers in this article!

Cooper Langby, Australia

Personally, I am from Sydney Australia. The first I heard of the Timberwolves was on an NBA 2K game, when they drafted me in the ‘my career’ mode. I liked the name and decided to look them up, watch some highlights and read about the team.

Although Timberwolves games barely get TV coverage here, I managed to watch a few and I was hooked.

Sports shops here barely sell Timberwolves gear (or many jerseys that aren’t Lebron, Curry or Kobe) so I searched online and now have three Timberwolves jerseys in my cupboard, a hat, a poster on my wall and a t-shirt. None of this comes cheap with overseas shipping fees, or I would have a whole lot more.

I remember rushing home from school at the beginning of the 2015-16 NBA season so I could watch the Timberwolves v Lakers game, in which Rubio scored a then career-high and the Lakers missed a buzzer-beater, granting the Minnesota Timberwolves the win. I was on the edge of my seat the whole last minute of the game, with my jersey on.

When everyone else at my district basketball club were wearing Kobe or Durant jerseys, I was wearing my Ricky Rubio or Zach LaVine jersey.

Alex Monseth, Minnesota

“I’ve grown up in Minnesota my entire life, so being a Wolves fan has been natural for me. But it honestly wasn’t until Rubio arrived that I really took my interest to a new level. His love for the game is contagious, and I hope we keep him around long enough to where we are successful.”

Brian Sampson, Wisconsin

“Some might call me a traitor but I’m not actually from Minnesota. I was born and raised in Wisconsin and am a Milwaukee Bucks fan. I’ve lived in Minnesota since college and have grown fond of the Timberwolves since they are always on television.

All of my friends are Timberwolves fans so it was hard not to like the team. Because of being from Wisconsin, I feel I give a more neutral perspective about the Wolves than some other writers might.

Now I’m not saying others are biased, or maybe I am, I just like the neutrality I have when writing about the Timberwolves. I have really enjoyed watching them grow the last couple of years and look forward to them taking that next step as their young core continues to develop.”

Alex Swendig, Texas

“ I’m from Midland, Texas. I always liked watching the Timberwolves when Stephon Marbury, KG and Latrell Sprewell were all there but I really became a fan of them when Kevin Love got drafted. He was so fun to watch and just had a great attitude. When he left the Wolves I had already become a fan and by then it was too late.

My favorite moment is probably just anything from Latrell Sprewell. I loved watching him fight his own teammates and argue with the coach.”

Talal Abdullah, New Jersey

“I was born in New Jersey but have moved a lot so never had a home team. I have four older brothers and they said in order for me to watch basketball with them I had to have a team.

Well I didn’t have a team but I had a favorite person and his name is Kevin Garnett, so Minnesota Timberwolves became my favorite team and I could never leave the WOLVES.

Favorite moments were Garnett winning MVP and LaVine winning slam dunk champ back to back.”
