With the 2012 NBA Off-Season still underway and very much far from over until the NBA Pre-Season kicks off next month, the Minnesota Timberwolves, one of the most active NBA teams during the off-season thus far, are still looking for more players to add to their roster.

The Timberwolves may have been one of the most active teams during the past couple of months ever since LeBron James and the Miami Heat won the NBA championship in June, but they aren’t necessarily the most successful one. The Lakers and maybe even the Suns and Clippers have been more successful in the off-season compared to the Timberwolves. However, those teams, excluding the Suns, already had players that we know could propel their respective team to the NBA playoffs.

For the Timberwolves and the Suns, the players they had last season weren’t enough as both teams got rid of some players. For the Suns it was basically just getting rid of their franchise player in Steve Nash who ended up going to L.A to play with Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard. The Timberwolves on the other hand have been getting rid of minimal players little by little and now their bench and part of their starting lineup has dramatically changed.

The Timberwolves currently are still looking at the Free Agent pool for potential additions. Aside from center Hassan Whiteside or forward Mickael Pietrus, the Timberwolves have also shown interest in snatching forward Sean Williams, who last played for the Boston Celtics. The Timberwolves are obviously not yet pleased with their big man spot and are still looking for more size to back up Nikola Pekovic and Kevin Love.

The question most of us are asking now is this: “Why Sean Williams? Who is this kid? Isn’t there any other big man in the market?”

Well to answer the first question, I’m not really sure why the Timberwolves would even consider getting Williams as I can honestly see him not being utilized on the team during the upcoming NBA season. For the second question, Williams is a 25-year old NBA player who was drafted into the NBA by the New Jersey Nets in the 2007 NBA Draft as the 17th overall pick. Williams was just recently waived by the Houston Rockets which makes him an unrestricted free agent. Currently, Williams can’t sign with the Boston Celtics, the team that traded him in exchange for Courtney Lee, however, he can sign with Minnesota.

So now, to answer the third question, I just have a one-word answer and a short explanation. The one-word answer is, “YES.” There are other big men options the Timberwolves can still look into such as Kenyon Martin, Andray Blatche and even Ivan Johnson. Mehmet Okur has already been rumored to be interested in joining the Timberwolves and in my opinion, I’d rather pick any of those 4 names stated above over Sean Williams. No disrespect of course. The Timberwolves are already young enough and experience is what they need really.

You can never have too many big men.

Center Hassan Whiteside, who played for the Sacramento Kings last season, is set to have a workout session with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Whiteside is not your average NBA center. As a college player at Marshall, Whiteside averaged an astounding 5.4 blocks per game during the 2010 season. In his first two seasons in the NBA, Hassan has only been able to play 19 games due to nagging injuries and hasn’t really been able to display all of his talents and skills to the NBA world.

Timberwolves scout, Milton Barnes, was attracted to Whiteside during a recent pickup game and quickly informed the Timberwolves’ officials to work out with him and see if he’s worth taking.

Whiteside has arrived in the Land of 10,000 Lakes yesterday and will begin workout today with the Timberwolves training staff and possibly head coach Rick Adelman.

Hassan Whiteside was drafted into the NBA in 2010 by the Sacramento Kings as the 33rd pick in the draft. During the early start of his rookie year, Whiteside was assigned to the Kings’ D-League affiliate team, the Reno Bighorns. Fortunately, Whiteside was called back to Sacramento but fell into injury which forced him to only play one game during his entire rookie season.

The young rookie had surgery to repair a partially torn tendon in his left knee in March 2011. Whiteside was then moved back into the D-League by the Kings but eventually was called back once again to play 18 games. Unfortunately for the second year NBA big man, Whiteside was waived by the Kings in order for the team to acquire guard Aaron Brooks, who spent last season in China.

In his 18 games played last season, Hassan Whiteside average 1.6 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.

This off-season, Whiteside has been working out with now-free agent forward Andray Blatche, another forward the Timberwolves should look into in my opinion. The Wolves are still on the hunt for another big man to join Nikola Pekovic, Kevin Love and Dante Cunningham. The purpose of adding another big man is to make Andrei Kirilenko and Derrick Williams stick with playing the small forward position. The Timberwolves are trying to pick up a big man before training camp begins on October 2. Minnesota has a veteran’s minimum left to offer to any fee agent.
