Shooting Guards

With the news coming out on Sunday that Sean Kilpatrick won’t be signed to another 10-day contract, Minnesota has three shooting guards — Kevin MartinZach LaVine, Gary Neal.

Definitely Returning Next Season

Kevin Martin – 32 years old; signed through 2016-’17 season; due $14.46 million

  • UFA in 2017
  • When healthy, Martin is the team’s best scoring threat. He could garner some trade interest this summer, but his age and contract make any potential return pale in comparison to the benefit of his veteran leadership, which Minnesota sorely needs.

Zach LaVine – 20 years old; signed through 2017-’18 season; due $7.59 million

  • RFA in 2018
  • The kid who saved the Slam Dunk Contest only has one more guaranteed season on his contract (that’s just how rookie contracts are), but the team will, without a doubt, pick up his 2016 and 2017 options. He’s having about the year people expected him to have — inconsistent. He’s shown sparse flashes of brilliance sprinkled among numerous terrible decisions.

Probably Won’t Be Back

Gary Neal – 30 years old; unrestricted free agent this offseason

  • I’m sure Flip Saunders and Co. would love to have Neal back at the right price. He’s played well in his short stint with the Timberwolves while healthy. However, there are two factors that could potentially cause Neal to look for another team this summer. One, he’s not getting any younger, and he probably wants another shot to play with a contender. Two, the Wolves have eight wings under contract right now. If they wind up with the #3 pick in the draft, they’ll probably take elite shooting guard prospect D’Angelo Russell from Ohio State. You can’t go into a season with that many wings.
