Wolves Wrap: Wolves stay competitive, ultimately fall to Warriors 110-101

This game was supposed to be really ugly.

The best and worst teams in the Western Conference squared off tonight at Oracle Arena as our last place Minnesota Timberwolves battled the first place Golden State Warriors.

Shockingly, the Wolves were right in this game for the entire four quarters. The Warriors did stretch their lead to as much as seventeen at the end of the third quarter before the Wolves were able to close the gap in the fourth quarter and make this one pretty interesting. When it was all said and done, the Warriors were just too much for the Wolves tonight as they went on to win 110-101.

After the first quarter of play, the Wolves actually led 31-28 as the Wolves seemed to have an answer for everything the Warriors threw at them. Unfortunately, this didn’t last long.

  • As the game wore on, the Warriors just proved to be too much for the Wolves too handle. Between the three-point shooting of Stephen Curry and that top-ranked defense, the young guns on the Wolves were just not ready to take down Golden State. The Warriors led by a score of 60-55 and by a score of 86-69 after the third quarter. A late surge by the Wolves in the fourth quarter was not quite enough to pull off the upset.

The story tonight for the Wolves was actually not Andrew Wiggins, although he was pretty good too. Zach LaVine set a new career-high and Timberwolves rookie single game scoring record with 37 points (13-21 FG, 6-10 3FG, 5-5 FT). LaVine scored 24 of those points in the second half. Wiggins added 17 points (7-16 FG, 1-1 3FG, 2-3 FT) and a career-high nine assists for the Wolves. All 17 of Wiggins’ points came in the first half.

The Warriors were led by league MVP candidate Stephen Curry, who tallied 34 points (11-21 FG, 5-11 3FG, 7-8 FT) and seven assists. Fellow ‘Splash Brother’ Klay Thompson added 23 points (10-25 FG, 3-9 3FG).

    Star of the Night

    Stephen Curry: 34 points (11-21 FG, 5-11 3FG, 7-8 FT), 4 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals

There’s a reason this guy is being considered for the NBA MVP award. Curry’s ability to shoot the perimeter shot on top of the main point guard skills he does so well make him arguably the best point guard in the game today. It’s impossible to ask Lorenzo Brown and Zach LaVine to defend a player like Curry.
