Good Luck Flip: The NBA Draft is Coming
By Tim Parochka
The NBA Draft is almost here.
It’s in ten days, but it feels like it’s in ten years. Thousands of different scenarios have entered my mind, and all of those thousand scenarios seem to make sense, one way or another.
I like Karl-Anthony Towns, and he seems like a natural fit for the Wolves, but his upside may not be as high as a fellow future draftee, Jahlil Okafor.
I like Jahlil Okafor because of his natural offensive low-post game, but the defense is one of the worst in the league, and it desperately needs improvement. Towns would be that improvement.
I absolutely love D’Angelo Russell, but I’m also realistic. We are not going to select him (although, the Wolves may regret that in 3-4 years).
Ultimately, this draft will come down to the two players’ that we have thought about for the past six months: Karl-Anthony Towns and Jahlil Okafor. I can easily convince myself that Towns and Okafor are the correct selections to make with the first-overall pick and that’s what makes this so difficult.
Karl-Anthony Towns is quicker and more mobile, as well as being a good pick-and-roll defender. He can also play multiple positions and it appears as though he can knock down a 15-18 ft. jumper, but I am not convinced that he will be a go-to player offensively. At least not at first.
Towns has an important skill that Jahlil Okafor doesn’t have. In the NBA, teams are playing small. The center position is becoming less valuable by the minute so Karl-Anthony Towns’ distinct advantage over Okafor is his ability to play with quicker players.
Jahlil Okafor isn’t a great defender because he’s not very mobile overall, but if his offensive game is going to be as good as projected to be, I want him on the Wolves.
Reportedly, Karl-Anthony Towns is picking up major steam as the #1 overall pick.
However, Jahlil Okafor is scheduled to be in Minnesota sometime this week.
Okafor intrigues me, and I feel like I already know the type of player Towns will be.
For example: If your girlfriend asks if you want to go to a movie…let’s say, John Tucker Must Die…you might be excited to spend time with her, but you know exactly what you’re going to get from the movie. That’s Towns.
If your girlfriend asks you to come stay the night, and she says that she has something for you, well…your night could be really great, or……it could mean that she bought the movie John Tucker Must Die. That’s Okafor.
In my opinion, Okafor has the biggest boom or bust factor, and Towns doesn’t have the biggest boom factor, but he doesn’t have much of a bust factor, either. Okafor is the riskier pick, and Towns is the secure pick.
So, my pick in the 2015 NBA Draft is……
Good luck Flip.
