#5 – Kevin Garnett Signs Record Contract Extension

Kevin Garnett made the Western Conference All-Star team as a 20 year-old, second-year player. He was allowed to begin talking to the Wolves regarding a contract extension after the season, and the organization saw the opportunity to lock up a potential franchise player.

The Timberwolves reportedly offered six years and $102 million, which Garnett’s agent turned down and then threatened that Garnett would be leaving in free agency following the 1997-98 season.

Eventually the Wolves signed the budding superstar for six years and $126 million — by far a record to that point. It spurred on the lockout that shortened the 1998-99 season, but it also kept KG in Minnesota for the prime years of his career. By the time this extension was ready to run out, the Wolves were reaping the benefits of The Big Ticket.
