#4 – Glen Taylor Purchases Timberwolves and Keeps Team In Minnesota
The Timberwolves were a candidate to relocate to a different NBA city in the mid-1990’s, despite just having come into existence for the 1989-90 campaign.
Because of a question regarding the mortgage on the Target Center, the original owners of the franchise were willing and motivated to sell the team to any number of potential owners that would look to move the team to a different city. Suitors included New Orleans, Nashville, and San Diego before New Orleans became a serious possibility in the latter stages of the process.
Ultimately, Taylor swooped in and kept the franchise in his home state. And while the team has won exactly two playoff series in the 20-plus years that he’s owned the franchise and there are serious questions regarding his willingness to accept change and adapt to the NBA’s changing culture, he is the reason that the Wolves are still in Minnesota.
