#2 – Timberwolves Draft Kevin Garnett Out of High School

The Wolves were a sorry franchise in the mid-1990’s after coming into existence in 1989. Kevin McHale and Flip Saunders were in charge of player personnel decisions in 1995, and they were overwhelmed by Kevin Garnett’s perormance in a pre-draft workout.

Garnett was an 18 year-old kid that was thought to be too raw to do much right away in the NBA after dominating at Farragut Academy in Chicago as a teenager. But the Timberwolves’ brass was in it for the long haul and new that Garnett could be a long-term solution and possibly even a star.

They were right, and Garnett reignited the trend of high school stars entering the NBA, soon to be followed by success stories like Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady as well as many flops.

With this selection, the Timberwolves assured themselves relevancy for the better part of the next decade.
