#2 – Kevin Love, UCLA, #5 in 2008 draft
The Timberwolves selected USC’s O.J. Mayo with the #3 pick and shipped him to Memphis later on draft night in an eight-player trade that brought back UCLA’s Kevin Love, the fifth pick in the draft.
Love didn’t do much as a rookie and was limited by the coaching staff in his sophomore season, too. He put up a 31-point, 31-rebound game on the New York Knicks early in 2010-11 that forced head coach Kurt Rambis to give him more playing time, and K-Love never looked back.
He’s easily the second-best player in franchise history to this point, making three All-Star teams in four years from 2010 through 2014, only limited by a broken hand in 2012-13.
The Timberwolves won 40 games but missed the playoffs in 2013-14 and Love was shipped to Cleveland to join LeBron James in the summer of 2014, meaning that number-one overall draft pick and future Rookie of the Year Andrew Wiggins was headed to Minnesota.
