Tom Gugliotta

How could you not like Googs?

In his four seasons with the Timberwolves, Gugliotta averaged 18.2 points per game, including two seasons of scoring 20 or more points per contest.

He wasn’t just some goofy guy with a goofy name, he could play.

More from Dunking with Wolves

Gugliotta played during a time when the Wolves were good enough to make the playoffs, but couldn’t get out of the first round. These were teams that had Stephon Marbury, Kevin Garnett, and Gugliotta, and if Starbury and Garnett had been older, I think they could have made a couple runs.

Googs had a pretty good mid-range jump shot and grabbed almost nine rebound per game with the Wolves. He was a reliable player that could play both the small and power forward position.

Also notable: don’t forget, he almost died in 1999. He was having trouble sleeping so starting taking sleeping pills. While on the phone with his wife he collapsed and stopped breathing. Gugliotta was rushed to the hospital and was able to get proper treatment because his teammate, Rex Chapman, found the bottle and was able to give the information to the doctors. Pretty scary stuff.

Googs was a great player over his NBA career, and hit his prime with the Timberwolves. And really, he should at least be in the hall of fame of cool last names.
