4. Derrick Williams

With the second pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, the Timberwolves selected Derrick Williams. Williams seemed as if he would end the trend of draft busts for the Timberwolves.

Coming into the draft Williams was a highly scouted prospect who had tremendous upside due to his unique skill set and his elite athleticism.

Williams did not turn out to be the player the Timberwolves expected. In his three seasons in Minnesota, Williams averaged 10.1 points per game and never seemed to be able to take that next step.

He was not able to adjust to the NBA game because he was what you call a “tweener.” He was not fast enough to play at the small forward position and he was not big enough to play at the power forward position.

Not only did this affect his offense but it also affected his defense. Williams was not a good defender on the wing and he was not a good rim protector because he was too small.

Also, it seemed as if Williams just couldn’t figure out what his role on the Timberwolves would be. While he may have had flashes of his elite athleticism and his skill set, he wasn’t able to ever separate himself into a different level.

This would, in a sense, cause him to become one of the biggest busts in Timberwolves history. Not to mention a man named Kawhi Leonard was  chosen 12 picks after him.

Leonard has gone on to become a finals MVP, while Williams has gone on to be a bust who has bounced around from countless teams in the NBA.
