Minnesota Timberwolves: 5 best draft trades
5. 1999 NBA Draft: Three team trade resulting in the drafting of Wally Szczerbiak with the sixth overall pick.
The Minnesota Timberwolves made a huge splash when it came to the 1999 NBA Draft. By executing a three-team trade involving the New Jersey Nets and Milwaukee Bucks, the Minnesota Timberwolves got their prize… Wally Szczerbiak.
The Timberwolves sent Stephon Marbury, Chris Carr and Bill Curley to the New Jersey Nets, and Paul Grant to the Milwaukee Bucks.
In return, the Timberwolves acquired Terrell Brandon, Brian Evans, and the eventual sixth overall pick Wally Szczerbiak.
In his first NBA season, Szczerbiak went on to be a starter for over half of the 73 games he played in. Wally averaged 11.6 points per game en route to being a first team all-rookie selection.
By also adding the scoring power of Terrell Brandon’s 17.1 points per game, the Minnesota Timberwolves boasted a 50-32 record that season.
Szczerbiak went on to play six full seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He averaged 15.5 points per game and made an all-star game appearance in the 2001-2002 season.
Wally Szczerbiak is still one of the most beloved Minnesota Timberwolves in franchise history.
