Tyus Jones enters his third year with the Timberwolves looking for more opportunities to become a truly impactful player.
Tyus Jones was destined to play for the Timberwolves someday.
The Burnsville, Minnesota native grew up a mere 17 miles from the Target Center. At Apple Valley High School, Jones was a varsity starter since eighth grade and had a clear future playing basketball.
Everyone knows that Jones came onto the scene when he led the Duke Blue Devils to the national title in 2015, earning the tournaments most outstanding player award. However, many were still surprised when Jones declared for the 2015 NBA Draft.
Even with all the skepticism by the media the Timberwolves saw something in him. They traded their two 2015 second-round picks as well as a 2019 second-round pick to the Cavaliers to take Jones 24th overall.
In his two years in the league, Jones has yet to see any consistent playing time. He appeared in 37 games in his rookie season and 60 last season. However, with both Ricky Rubio and Kris Dunn being dealt this summer, opportunity has come knocking for Jones to step up. While he will clearly be behind Jeff Teague on the depth chart, he will now step into the backup role he has been waiting for.
With that in mind, Tyus must improve his game in order to get more minutes as the only other point guard currently on the roster. Here are five goals for Jones to accomplish in order to improve this season and help his team.
