Top 5 rebounders in Timberwolves history
#4 – Sam Mitchell
Many will remember Sam Mitchell as the interim head coach for the Timberwolves before they hired Tom Thibodeau. Mitchell took over for Flip Saunders after Flip was forced to step away from coaching while receiving treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Mitchell served a full season at the helm of the young Wolves squad during the 2015-2016 season after Flip’s tragic passing.
Ultimately, the team finished with a disappointing 29-53 record. Minnesota had a young nucleus but had been expected to start to turn the corner that season. Much to the disappointment of their new head coach and the fan base alike, the team stumbled and had yet another mediocre finish.
Before Mitchell’s coaching career, he played 13 seasons in the NBA with 10 of them in a Timberwolves uniform. The highest rebounding averages of his career came during his rookie season (5.8) and his third year in the league (5.8), but despite the lower than normal averages, the 10 seasons of playing in Minnesota led to Mitchell becoming the franchise’s third all-time rebounder (3,030).
