Timberwolves Roundup: Jerseys, Dunleavy, 2k18 ratings
By Ben Beecken
Welcome to another edition of Timberwolves Roundup as we bring you Wolves news ranging from Thursday’s expected jersey announcement, free agency rumors, and how Wolves players stack up in NBA 2k18 ratings.
The past few weeks have seen a trickle of NBA teams release their new Nike uniforms without any major re-designs. From Oklahoma City’s only slightly altered new look to, most recently, Denver’s lean towards a deeper blue, the changes have mostly been subtle.
Of the few teams that will see something closer to a full tear-down and re-build, the Timberwolves are rumored to be releasing the new look as soon as Thursday. No word on whether it will be a press conference with players donning the new digs or simply an online release, but we’ll be on top of it once it goes down.
Karl-Anthony Towns teased the new look on Instagram Wednesday, sending this photo into the world…
This image contradicts some of the popularly leaked images from NBA 2k18 that some folks believed to be the new look, although this photo takes that off the table as there is no dark blue stripe across the shoulders. The darker shade of blue does look similar to those screenshots, however.
Also, Andrew Wiggins posted the below, giving us a view of the new shorts.
It isn’t hard to piece together where the overall look is going. It seems like it’ll be pretty clean, and it will be fun to see what the other three jersey designs look like. And don’t forget: a new court design is coming, too.
Elsewhere, the Mike Dunleavy, Jr. rumor cropped up again. Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press first confirmed that Dunleavy remains on the Wolves radar (along with Aaron Brooks, Tony Allen, and Dante Cunningham), but Sam Amico appeared to double-confirm the Dunleavy portion.
Dunleavy would add much-needed shooting to the wing position while Allen and Cunningham would bring defense and toughness. Allen’s role is more of a need, but old friend Cunningham has played more small forward in recent years and could play there some, especially with his newfound corner three-point jump shot.
Brooks is less of a need, as there should be some concern that the mediocre veteran could at some point overtake Tyus Jones as the main backup point guard. Not to say that the Wolves couldn’t do better than Jones to backup Jeff Teague, but Brooks isn’t the answer. If he’s strictly the third guy (see: John Lucas III at the start of last season), then that’s fine. Add away, Coach Thibodeau.
The last thing we’ll cover in today’s roundup is an article written by Kyle Ratke over at Timberwolves.com regarding Towns’ NBA 2k18 player rating. We first discussed the release of Towns’ rating a couple of weeks ago here at DWW, but Ratke compares Towns to other recently-released ratings, including the top two released thus far in Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. And yes, KAT does come in third in the league thus far.
