3. Offense/Defense

First, let’s take a look at the defenses a bit because we compared them in the last slide.  The Vikings were ranked 3rd in the NFL for defense whereas the Timberwolves were with the bottom of the NBA in that category.

When looking to give a defensive edge this year I think we can all agree the Vikings will be the better team.  Even with large improvements on defense expected to come for the Timberwolves, it’s very unlikely that they improve to become a top five team in the NBA.

Thibodeau is a good coach who is working hard to build a defensive culture but Zimmer has beat him to the punch.

Defensive Winner: Vikings

When looking at the two offenses of these teams, the Timberwolves seem to hold a clear edge.

It’s no secret that the Vikings struggled on offense last year.  They ranked dead last in rushing yards, 18th in passing yards, and 28th in total yards.  A team that can’t move the ball on offense won’t end up putting up points in football either.

So it’s no shock that the Vikings were in the bottom third of the NFL in points scored per game.  I won’t even get into talking about the failures of the offensive line for everyone’s sake.

With the level of uncertainty on the offensive side of the ball still very high this may be a similar year on offense for the Vikes.

On the flip side, the Timberwolves may be quietly becoming one of the best offensive teams in the NBA.

Last season the young Timberwolves were ranked 10th in overall offensive efficiency.  The year before that they were ranked 11th in the same category.  The Timberwolves haven’t been ranked that high consistently since KG roamed the court in Target Center.

The only real concern for the Timberwolves is a lack of three point shooting.  However, that was their same concern last year and they were still ranked 10th.

This year should prove to be even better on offense given a few of the names added to the team being Butler, Teague, and Crawford.  When comparing the two offenses the edge has to go to the Timberwolves here.
