Minnesota Timberwolves: 5 numbers that show their improvement
3. Controlling the glass
Pulling down missed shots may be one of the most underrated aspects of basketball. It’s entirely crucial to limit your opponents opportunities (or increase yours) at scoring points. And rebounding is the best way to do that.
While the Timberwolves’ numbers haven’t taken huge leaps in this category, the marginal improvement can go a long way toward winning close ball games.
Throughout 2016-17, Minnesota allowed opposing teams to score 13.4 second chance points a game (21st in the NBA) while allowing them to grab 24.1 percent of available offensive rebounds (20th).
Fast forward to 2017, and so far they are only giving up 11.6 second chance points (11th) while opposing teams are snatching up 22.7 percent of the offensive rebounds (15th).
We’ve already seen some of the impact the numbers have had, as the Timberwolves are winning close games this season. This is a stark contrast compared to last year when no lead was safe entering the fourth quarter.
