3-Point Shooting

Don’t look now, but Towns may have found his stroke from beyond the arc. In his previous two seasons, Towns sported a 34.1 and 36.7 3-point percentage. This season, however, he is shooting an impressive 40.6 percent from the three-point while attempting more threes than ever.

Also for good measure, here is another table showing the same players in the previous ‘Post Play Efficiency’ slide, but showing their three

The fact Towns is hitting a high percentage of his outside shots is important. But maybe more important is how he is making them. Towns is knocking down threes in a variety of ways.

Spot up from the wing:

Pick n’ pop at the top of the key:

Loose ball unassisted in the corner:

The fact that Towns is seeking to take more threes and knocking them down in a multitude of ways leads me to believe that this his 3-point improvements are fairly sustainable and not just an extended hot streak from outside.

Another aspect of all three videos that stands out is how decisive and confident he looks taking the long ball. He consistently has a quick release and has no hesitation when it comes to letting it fly.

At this point, Towns may just be the best three-point shooter on the Wolves’ roster. Only Aaron Brooks and Nemanja Bjelicia hold a higher percentage than Towns. However, Towns is shooting nearly twice as many outside shots as they are per game, so I would argue his percentage is more impressive.
