According to reports, the Minnesota Timberwolves have fully guaranteed Marcus Georges-Hunts contract for the rest of the 2017-18 season.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Tom Thibodeau faced an important decision on Sunday afternoon. It was an easy one, but a decision nonetheless. Faced with having to guarantee Marcus Georges-Hunt contract for the rest of the season or release him, the Timberwolves have chosen to keep the 6-foot-5 wing around.

This was hardly a surprise, as Georges-Hunt was played fairly well in the limited time he’s seen on the floor. In 22 appearances this season, he’s averaged 3.4 minutes, 0.9 points, 0.1 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game.

The stats hardly tell the whole story, or any part of it for that matter, because Georges-Hunt has been a nice depth piece for Minnesota. He’s come off the bench to play positive and meaningful minutes a handful of times throughout the season and will unquestionably be called upon again if the need arises.

Although he has yet to prove he has a strong offensive game at the NBA level, he has shown he can stick with some of the better offensive scorers in this league. Often times, he’s asked to just that for a possession or two at the end of quarters.

Another main reason the Timberwolves need Georges-Hunt to stick around is their lack of depth on the wing. Behind starters Jimmy Butler and Andrew Wiggins, Jamal Crawford is the only other wing who receives consistent playing time.

Shabazz Muhammad has played his way completely out of the rotation and Nemanja Bjelica does get some time at the three, although that should be kept to a minimum.

If Minnesota ever loses one of their starters to injury, heaven forbid, Georges-Hunt will be the man to call upon to play extra minutes. Let’s hope that never happens, but he’s at least proven he belongs in the NBA.
