1. Trey Burke – Point Guard

Trey Burke is another player who was “originally” drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves, although he was moved on draft night to the Utah Jazz. In return Minnesota received Gorgui Dieng and Muhammad. Burke was the ninth-overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft.

Now, Minnesota could have all three of those players on their roster. In the NBA, he has spent two season with the Jazz, and then was traded to the Washington Wizards for one season.

Minnesota could use another point guard on their roster with Jeff Teague out for a few weeks. His injury wasn’t severe enough to keep him out for a few months, but it wouldn’t hurt to have a backup point guard on the roster. Aaron Brooks is currently holding that position and it hasn’t been pretty. It’s easy to see why the Wolves would like to see a better option in the backup spot.

Burke has been lighting it up with the New York Knicks G-league team. He’s not on a two-way contract with the Knicks, which means that any team can go out and sign him.

He’s currently averaging 27.1 points (49.3 field goal percentage, 41.4 3-point percentage), 3.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. Minnesota would love to have another player who can light it up in the scoring column.

Not only would it help fill the void of the backup point guard situation, but it kills two birds with one stone: improving both the bench scoring and 3-point shooting. At the G-League level, he’s shooting the ball at an impressive 41.4 percent from deep, on 6.5 attempts per game.

Minnesota would love to have a player who can come in and relieve Brooks from his duty as the top backup point guard. Worst case scenario: Teague comes back and if you see what you like, you can run a two-point guard lineup with Tyus Jones. The two-guard lineup worked greatly last season with Kris Dunn, and maybe Minnesota can find the same success with Teague and Jones.

All five of these players would be great options for this team to better position themselves this season. We’ll just have to wait and see what Tom Thibodeau decides to do next…
