4. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

I love Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s game and I would love to put him higher on this list, but some of his off-court issues are problematic and his contract would be hard to buyout because it’s so large. This season he spent some time in jail, but was able to continue to play throughout his time served. You may even recall him wearing an ankle monitor in games played.

Caldwell-Pope hasn’t improved like many had anticipated for the Los Angeles Lakers. He’s averaging 13.1 points, 2.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game. He can also play good defense and shoot it from 3. He won’t block shots, but he can clamp down on the player he’s guarding and will come away with a few steals as well – averaging 1.6. From 3, he’s shooting it 35.6 percent on 5.5 attempts.

Minnesota could surely use a player that plays defense and shoots the ball from three well. Even if he isn’t hitting his shot from distance, he can still score the ball in a variety of ways, something that would be of value going forward.

One other great thing about Caldwell-Pope is that he’s 24 years old. If you like him after the season is done, you could look to re-sign him again. He may attract a lot of money, which is something that would be hard for Minnesota to commit to. Right now, with the Los Angeles Lakers, he’s making close to $18 million. Minnesota will have a lot of money tied up with Towns, Jimmy Butler and Andrew Wiggins. If they can get a discount on Caldwell-Pope, I’m sure Minnesota would love to bring him on.
