Timberwolves Roundup: Kevin Garnett interview with GQ, and more…
By Ben Beecken
Today’s Timberwolves roundup covers Kevin Garnett‘s recent interview with GQ, plus some KG Area 21 content and a few other recent Wolves tidbits.
Kevin Garnett is officially a member of the media. And as weird as that sounds, he’s finally come to grips with it as well.
In a wide-ranging interview with GQ, KG discussed how different being on the flip-side of the media-player coin really is, as well as addressing some of the more folk-loric tales about his NBA career and some behind-the-scenes notes surrounding his ‘Area 21’ segment on TNT.
As it turns out, when Garnett wants to request that a guest join him on the TNT set, he has to go through public relations representatives like the rest of the common media folk.
"Do you appreciate the media more now that you’re a part of it?It just shows me how private I was. I was always like, no, no, no, no, no. But back then, we were drowned with so many interview requests, we didn’t have our own platform to speak out. Now, when we have to track down a guy and put in a request with their PR, that’s funny to me [laughs]. I have so much respect for the process of it. I wasn’t aware of it when I played, now when you’re trying to get people on the show, I totally get it and understand it."
The guest that Garnett would most like to have on his show? NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick (ironically, a GQ Man of the Year). The current player he’d most like to play with in the NBA? Surprisingly, DeMarcus Cousins is his answer.
Also discussed: a return to working with the AND1 brand, his love for the city of Toronto (but healthy skepticism about the current edition of the Raptors), the head-butting-the-wall rumor, and the putting-the-Timberwolves-on-hold rumor related to his massive contract extension.
Be sure to check out the interview in it’s entirety; it’s a fun read.
Also on the Garnett front: he had former teammate and, most recently, Timberwolves interim head coach during the 2015-16 season Sam Mitchell, join him in Area 21 along with former Wolf Ricky Davis and former Minnesota Lynx star Katie Smith. Here was their chat related to Wolves practice in the early years:
Elsewhere, Gorgui Dieng continued to be a great ambassador to his home country of Senegal with a a second-annual fundraiser.
Also, updating our notes from earlier in the week/Wolves media availability when Tom Thibodeau, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Jeff Teague spoke about Friday’s … debacle … in Utah, Jace Frederick of the St. Paul Pioneer Press had a few additional quotes from Thibs, Towns, and Taj Gibson related to treatment of the officials and the importance of building relationships with them.
Next: The evolution of Gorgui Dieng's jumper
Congratulations: the long, cold, six-day stretch with zero Timberwolves games is almost over. Wolves-Celtics is Thursday night, and we’ll have pregame and postgame coverage right here at DWW.
