Back to the Future: The 2003-04 NBA
By Trey Flynn
The NBA has been split up by conferences and divisions for the entirety of its existence, but there was a division that was disbanded.
The NBA currently has two conferences – the Eastern and the Western conference. Those two conferences have been split up into three divisions over the past fourteen seasons. The Eastern conference consists of the Atlantic, Central, and Southeast division. The Western conference consists of the Northwest, Pacific, and Southwest division.
Fourteen seasons ago, during the 2003-04 NBA season, the NBA cut out their Midwest division. Funnily enough, the last winner of this division was the, Minnesota Timberwolves, who were led by MVP Kevin Garnett. Which didn’t do much for the Wolves, as they lost in the playoffs.
Today, the Central Division can be considered the league’s Midwestern-based division, with central having four former members of the Midwest Division.
