NBA Draft: 5 options for the Minnesota Timberwolves at pick No. 20
By Ben Beecken
3. Chandler Hutchison, G/F, Boise State
Chandler Hutchison was a four-year contributor at Boise State, starting 18 games as a freshman and eight as a sophomore before becoming a full-time starter in his junior season. Since then, he’s averaged 18.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, and three assists per game and shot 36.5 percent on 3-point attempts.
He’s big for a shooting guard, listed at six-foot-seven. (Hutchison did not attend the combine and has shut down his workouts; Givony reports that he has a promise, perhaps from Indiana at No. 23.) He’ll be seen as polished in this draft, and has the size/athleticism combination to be a contributor in the NBA from day one.
An increasing steal rate and consistent rebounding rate suggest that the game slowed down for Hutchison as he got to the later stages of his college career. That type of savvy, combined with the physical tools would fit Thibodeau’s defensive game plan.
The switchability is a question mark, however, as the end of the below video highlights.
Hutchison is a good shooter but doesn’t have an extremely quick release. What’s more impressive is his first step and finishing ability in the lane, although a lack of a pull-up jumper will allow defenses to play back and stop the drive.
Obviously, a pull-up jumper and defensive positioning can be taught, as many of the tools are already in place. But he is 22 years old, and the learning curve would have to be shorter than it typically would for a rookie, and he perhaps isn’t as far along as NBA teams might prefer out of a 22-year-old.
