NBA Draft: What are the Minnesota Timberwolves most likely to do?
By Ben Beecken
5 Percent: Timberwolves make blockbuster trade
The Timberwolves made one of the biggest draft night trades in recent memory just last season when they landed Jimmy Butler, so forgive me for being skeptical that they’ll make a major splash this year, too.
There’s no reason to believe that the Timberwolves are shopping Andrew Wiggins, other than that they would surely like to clear some cap space for next summer, as well as for extending Karl-Anthony Towns and Jimmy Butler. Plus, there are the recent rumors that Butler is unsure about playing alongside Wiggins for the next several years – a fair and legitimate concern.
So, let’s entertain the idea that there is a team out there that not only still believes in Wiggins’ talent – after all, there is a lot of it – but also believes in it to the tune of five years and $146 million. Remember, it was only nine months ago when the Wolves were basically backed into a corner, knowing that if they didn’t pay Wiggins, someone else would have in restricted free agency. And all it takes is one.
Could the Spurs be interested in Wiggins’ talent level in return for the disgruntled Kawhi Leonard? Doubtful. What about the Grizzlies, in a trade involving Chandler Parsons’ unreasonable (but much shorter than Wiggins’) contract? Perhaps.
Next: Could Jimmy Butler leave next summer for the Nets?
At any rate, this is an unlikely scenario to play out but far from impossible. It would be hard for me to believe that there isn’t at least one team out there that would still give up an asset in order to land Andrew Wiggins. Again, all it takes is one.
