Minnesota Timberwolves: Classic uniforms for 2018-19 released
By Ben Beecken
The Minnesota Timberwolves have revealed which of their historical uniforms will be worn as their ‘Classic’ design during the 2018-19 season.
It’s been just over a year since the redesign of the Minnesota Timberwolves’ uniforms took place.
Reaction was mixed at first, but there seems to have been somewhat of a consensus that the Wolves’ new uniforms have been a success. They look clean and simple on the court, and that goes a long way.
After the release of the Association (the Wolves’ white design), Icon (blue), Statement (green) uniforms last year upon the NBA’s switch to Nike jerseys, only a handful of teams released their fourth uniform design last year, the category entitled ‘Classic’..
Now, we have the Timberwolves’ version of classic.
The original black threads absolutely belong in the conversation of best uniform designs in franchise history. This is an awesome pick.
It appears that the only difference between the originals and the Classic would be the width of the sleeves. The shorts will even include the rarely-used alternate “MT” logo on the front of the left leg and the fearsome-looking Wolf on the back of the right leg.
The Wolves will wear the jerseys five times at home during the season, with the first instance coming on Halloween against the Utah Jazz. It will be the eighth game of the regular season.
While the chatter surrounding what the Classic jersey would be seemed to surround the inaugural version of uniforms, that theory overlooked that those jerseys were featured less than a decade ago as the Wolves’ Hardwood Classic uniforms.
Clearly, the organization (and Nike, for that matter) wanted to head in the direction of the best years in franchise history.
In fact, the Timberwolves cop to this on the website that was set up to commemorate the 30th season in franchise history. From the description of the new Classic jerseys:
"The Classic Edition commemorates the golden years of our franchise’s history and serves as a retro to highlight our longest tenured uniform."
The counterargument to selecting these jerseys is, of course, that the team only stopped wearing this design 10 years ago. But on the other hand, the league has already reached as far back as the Minnesota Muskies to find retro uniforms. (Infamously, Ricky Rubio tore his ACL in a Muskies jersey, so I think we’re done with those for awhile.)
And don’t forget that the Lakers stole the Minneapolis Lakers jerseys, despite the fact those jerseys say “MPLS” across the chest.
All things considered, this was a savvy choice by the NBA/Timberwolves/Nike. We speak for all Wolves fans when we say that we can’t wait to catch a glimpse of these threads on the court on Oct. 31.
