Timberwolves: Luol Deng rumors could complete the Timberbulls
By Trey Flynn
Whether you like it or not, sources are linking the Minnesota Timberwolves to ex-Chicago Bulls forward Luol Deng.
The Athletics Jon Krawczynski and New York Times NBA analyst Marc Stein have both announced that sources have told them the Minnesota Timberwolves are interested in bringing in Luol Deng to help the depth of the team and to add a savvy veteran.
After the Los Angeles Lakers released Deng this week, many fans @’d us on Twitter and plead that the Timberwolves would not sign another ex-Bull, but as told above by Marc Stein, it’s plausible.
The first thought Dunking With Wolves has to have is that head coach Tom Thibodeau must be out of Chicago Bulls mind to reunite his old team. Especially since Krawczynski said the Wolves are still very interested in bringing Joakim Noah to Minnesota too.
As of right now, the Wolves have added Jimmy Butler, Taj Gibson, and Derrick Rose. If they do indeed add Luol Deng as sources have stated, then that would reunite a team that not many wanted to get back together.
It’s like NSYNC got back together but the only one with any potential who has stayed on the team is Justin Timberlake/Jimmy Butler.
Don’t judge me for that take.
However, adding a veteran like Luol Deng or Joakim Noah wouldn’t be the worst idea. Going off of Thibs roster adjustments last season, you can realistically see a lineup that including Deng or Noah – unless of course, an injury happens.
As for Luol Deng and what he’s capable of bringing to the table … uh … no one knows? Deng went from averaging 26 minutes a game two seasons ago, to just playing one single game all of last year. What he’s really been known for is his ability to play the 3-and-D position really well.
Deng can knock down the 3 – at times inconsistently – and run in transition to play defense on most opponents with ease. Thibodeau loved that about his game and I don’t think it’ll hurt to have a player like Deng help mentor some of the young guys on the team.
In Deng’s career, he’s averaged 15.0 points per game, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists, also adding a steal a game in there as well. But most notably, Deng’s ability to play hustle ball off the stat sheet is extremely impressive. He’s prided himself in his stamina and is averaging over 35 minutes played a game in his career.
