Minnesota Timberwolves: Wolves fill camp roster with Johnson-Odom and Stark
By Ben Beecken
The Minnesota Timberwolves have filled their training camp roster with journeyman guard Darius Johnson-Odom and rookie Jonathan Stark.
Amid the mess that is the Jimmy Butler situation, the Minnesota Timberwolves finally pulled the trigger on filling out the training camp roster by inking a pair of guards to contracts.
Journeyman Darius Johnson-Odom worked out for the Wolves earlier this month, and Jonathan Stark played on the Timberwolves entry at Las Vegas Summer League.
Both are apparently just on training camp contracts, meaning that there is still one guaranteed-contract spot remaining on the roster.
Here’s what I wrote about Johnson-Odom a couple of weeks ago:
"Darius Johnson-Odom is about to turn 29 years old and has played 21 total minutes over seven NBA games, last appearing for Philadelphia during the 2013-14 campaign. He has yet to score a point in the NBA.Back at that time, Johnson-Odom was a D-League star, scoring 21.7 points per game over two seasons. Since then, he’s been playing in Europe. Last year, he put up 18.7 points per game in Lega Basket while shooting 40.6 percent from beyond the arc."
He would seem to have little chance of making the team, but is more veteran camp depth at a wing spot that can never be too full of capable bodies.
Stark is a bit more interesting if only because he’s a rookie and scored the ball (a lot) in college. He played well in Vegas during summer league; here was what I said about him just prior to the end of the summer games:
"Jonathan Stark has only received 14.7 minutes per game so far in summer league, but has shot the ball the best of the group (12-of-22, 55 percent) and has shown an impressive floater as part of his game and has scored the ball well in transition.Similar to Terrell, Stark is an undrafted player who spent four years in college, splitting them between Tulane and Murray State. He had similar scoring numbers to Terrell also, but is much smaller and a better passer.Don’t be surprised if one of [Isaiah] Cousins or Stark makes the team, with Terrell beginning the year in the G-League. At any rate, the Wolves could have a good problem when it comes to filling out their NBA and G-League rosters at the combo guard position."
Isaiah Cousins is not with the organization, of course, and Terrell remains on a two-way contract. Stark should have a shot at sticking, or at least hanging around in Des Moines as part of the Iowa Wolves.
Expect him to see a decent amount of playing time in preseason as he battles for the final guaranteed roster spot. Remember, there isn’t anyone in the Marcus Georges-Hunt role from last year as of yet. (It is a bit strange that MGH wasn’t retained and remains a free agent, but that’s another topic for another day.)
And guess what? We’ll only have to wait until Saturday, Sep 30 at Golden State to find out if either of these guys sees the court…
