Minnesota Timberwolves: 2 Jimmy Butler trades to Philadelphia 76ers
By Trey Flynn
Forward Robert Covington of the Philadelphia 76ers is a high volume shooting wing that was honored with being voted on the NBA’s All Defensive team last season. In his prime, the 28-year-old is looking to make more of a splash this season on a nicely-valued contract of $10-11 million over the next few seasons.
Covington is averaging a really nice stat line this season on both ends of the court.
Shooting 11.5 PPG and 44 percent from downtown; adding some more qualities to his game with 5.5 TRB, 2.0 steals, and 1.5 blocks, he’s an all-around player.
The fit with Minnesota would be fluid, as he can playing the guard or wing, helping Andrew Wiggins become more versatile in the roster too. Covington often guards his opponents first or second best player, and he isn’t to be trifled with, which sounds like a Tom Thibodeau guy.
Mike Muscala was added in as a filler with his $5.5 million contract, but he’s also a nice stretch-four or five that could potentially replace Gorgui Dieng if his contract gets sent somewhere after a Butler deal is completed.
The 2019 second round pick should be within the 45-55 pick range in next years draft, and the 2021 Miami Heat pick could turn out to be a very high lottery choice, as the Heat will lose most of their current roster around that time and may be in rebuild mode.
As previously illustrated, Jimmy Butler going to Philly just makes sense for a win-now attitude, which is what the whole Sixers organization is screaming now that they’ve won their tank-a-thon after all these years by getting two potential Hall of Fame players in Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.
