Minnesota Timberwolves: 2 trades for the Wizards’ Bradley Beal
By Trey Flynn
This trade gets messy with draft rights, but essentially I give the Washington Wizards the best chance at a rebuild-now mode with soon-to-be useful picks.
If this transaction was made, the Wizards would have three first round picks (including their own) this draft and they’d potentially all be lottery choices, especially if the Wizards intend on tanking and if the Phoenix Suns stay as the worst team in the league.
Also, two other picks in 2020 and 2021 from the Wolves and Suns just up the ante even more.
Moreover, the Wiz get the young prospect Josh Jackson, who they can work with at the Otto Porter position, assuming Porter gets traded elsewhere in the near future.
The Suns need to entice free agents to their team in the future to attract their young star Devin Booker to stay in Arizona, as well as their future star in Deandre Ayton. Adding a top-10 point guard in John Wall definitely helps this point guard-less roster out tenfold.
Phoenix has been looking to become a top contender around the league for quite some time now, and rather than put all your chips in on hoping to land the first pick in the 2020 draft (mirroring the process of the Philadelphia 76ers), taking the chance on John Wall may be their best bet when they already have Booker and Ayton.
The Timberwolves say goodbye to a good portion of their roster in Jeff Teague, Tyus Jones, Taj Gibson, Gorgui Dieng, and two draft picks (1st and a 2nd). That isn’t too bad of a loss when you consider the fact that the Wolves get back All-Star Bradley Beal and T.J. Warren, even if they’d be lacking at the point guard spot.
However, this gives Derrick Rose his chance at starting, and allows the newly acquired Jerryd Bayless to grab the back up position, if needed.
T.J. Warren – when not coming off as a sixth man – also allows the Wolves to have quite the starting lineup when they want to run up the pace:
Small/long Ball: Bradley Beal, Andrew Wiggins, Robert Covington, T.J. Warren, Karl-Anthony Towns.
Overall, this trade seems a bit too crazy for any of these GM’s to pull the trigger, and the first trade is more likely. However, seeing how the Houston Rockets magically sent a quarter of their roster and several picks to the Los Angeles Clippers for Chris Paul, anything is possible.
I like the versatility of the Wolves roster in either deal, so I’m hoping after they sold Jimmy Butler for two great pieces in Robert Covington and Dario Saric, that the Wolves’ can top it off with snagging the potential garage sale roster in Washington.
