Cameron Reynolds was a nice late-season addition for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Here’s a look at what the former Tulane star did in a short period of time.
Cameron Reynolds was a welcome addition to a battered and bruised Minnesota Timberwolves squad and probably would not have made the roster if the Wolves had remained healthy.
But, if we’re going to find a positive out of a negative situation, then Reynolds was a great signing.
Reynolds was signed to a 10-day contract after the team didn’t bring back Isaiah Canaan. Reynolds ultimately received two 10-day contracts and then eventually signed a multi-year deal to stick with the team.
Whether he makes the roster next season is to be determined, but for now, let’s look at his rookie season.
One thing he did very well was shooting the ball from 3-point range. The Minnesota Timberwolves are a good offensive team overall but do not shoot it well from distance. Reynolds’ impact from beyond the arc was felt right away.
This season he shot 41.2 percent from 3-point range on 2.7 attempts per contest. It’s not a large sample size (19 games), but given his track record throughout college and his first season in the G League, there’s every reason to believe that his average from distance can be consistent.
He ended the season headed in the right direction against the Denver Nuggets, dropping a career-high 19 points on 7-of-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from three.
By the end of the year, he was averaging 5.0 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game in just 13.6 minutes of play. Along with his shooting, Reynolds was not shy playing down the stretch of a lot of games.
He was out there playing good defense and even helping create key turnovers from opponents.
These plays, along with spotting up from 3-point line in transition was something the Wolves sorely needed. The team had glimpses of that from Robert Covington before he got injured and, at times, from both Anthony Tolliver and Dario Saric.
The team should get more 3-and-D next year with a fresh start and, hopefully, a much more healthy campaign. Reynolds deserves a spot on the roster next year and should have a good chance of making it after impressing people in such a short time.
