Minnesota Timberwolves: 4 front office candidates for the Wolves
By Zach Lung
Gersson Rosas
Another name that has been associated with the Timberwolves is Houston Rockets’ executive vice president of basketball operations, Gersson Rosas.
Like Winger, Minnesota has already reportedly contacted and received permission from Houston to interview Rosas. The Wolves will likely have competition for his services as Rosas has received plenty of interest from other front offices, including both the Hornets and 76ers in recent years.
Rosas is also focused on his current team, of course, as the Rockets look to make a long playoff run, meaning his candidacy could take a longer time to resolve.
Pros
Gersson Rosas has spent 16 years with the Houston Rockets, helping to organize a progressive and analytics-centric franchise.
He has worked alongside the Rockets’ well-respected boss, Daryl Morey, in assembling a roster of largely 3-and-D players with whom to surround perennial MVP candidate James Harden. It’s safe to say that the Rockets roster not only fits the current NBA landscape, but it was Morey and his front office who helped shape where the league is today.
If Minnesota were to hire Rosas, it would be a drastic change from the old-fashioned methods used by former president of basketball operations, Tom Thibodeau. Fans could expect an analytics-driven approach that would likely overhaul the team’s current roster. This approach has been extremely successful in Houston for both Rosas and More as they have quickly turned the Rockets into a perennial contender.
Cons
While Rosas may have the most experience of any potential candidate, he is not without his own red flags.
For one, Daryl Morey receives plenty of credit for the assembly of the Rockets’ over recent years, and rightly so. Rosas also had a concerning three-month stretch as the general manager in Dallas before quickly resigning from the position.
Minnesota will need to do their due diligence in regards to that situation and Rosas’ own desire to be a part of the Timberwolves’ front office before pulling the trigger on an important decision.
