Chauncey Billups

The candidate with the least experience but the most fame is Chauncey Billups. The former NBA point guard spent two seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves before becoming a household name during his tenure in Detroit.

Billups retired five years ago and has spent much of his time since as an NBA analyst for ESPN. Expect to hear his name brought-up frequently during the Timberwolves’s search due to his public desire of leading an NBA front office.

Pros

Chauncey Billups is well-regarded around the league and known for having a highly intellectual basketball mind.

Billups has been connected to front office positions for some time now, nearly becoming the president of basketball operations for the Cleveland Cavaliers back in 2017. Mr. Big Shot had a successful NBA career and should know what it looks like to build a contender.

Billups is also personable, currently serving as one of the most thoughtful analysts at ESPN and would positively contribute to the teams public relations after a tumultuous few years in that department.

Cons

Like Calvin Booth, a Chauncey Billups hire would be seen by many as another country club hire by Glen Taylor.

Minnesota needs to be confident in Billups’ plan for the future and not rely on his success as player or his past connection to the team. Billups also has no front office experience — a strong detriment when compared to the resumes of the other candidates who are connected to the Wolves’ search.

This would be the most radical candidate for Minnesota to hand the reigns, but perhaps radical is what this franchise needs after the disappointment experienced in the past.
