Minnesota Timberwolves: 3 goals for the offseason
By Nick Crain
1. Find a permanent head coach
Following only 19 wins through the first 40 games of the 2018-19 season, Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau was fried. He had been the head coach of the team since 2016.
Ryan Saunders was immediately promoted to interim head coach. At just 33 years old, he became the youngest active head coach in the NBA. Saunders would go 17-25 to finish out the season as interim head coach.
Under the guidance of the team’s new President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas, the Minnesota Timberwolves have started their search for a new head coach. The list of rumored candidates for the opening include:
- Ryan Saunders
- Darvin Ham
- Juwan Howard
- David Vanterpool
- Chris Finch
Pinning down a head coach is obviously one of the goals for the Timberwolves. The sooner the better, as this will just give whoever is chosen more time with the team this offseason. It appears that Ryan Saunders has the best chance of being hired, especially after gaining the support of several players last season as interim head coach. Having the same head coach for an entire season will create continuity and should result in a more consistent team overall.
Overall, these are the three biggest goals the Minnesota Timberwolves should have this offseason. If they are able to take care of all of these things, they have a chance at a playoff spot next season. None of these goals are unrealistic or unobtainable. Rather, these are very achievable goals that could be completed early in the offseason with plenty of time to set even more goals and make more moves.
