Minnesota Timberwolves 7 most heartbreaking moments of the year
6. Missing out on free agent shooters this summer
It may not have been heartbreaking at the time, but not signing many good three-point shooters this offseason has limited what this Timberwolves team is capable of.
After watching Ryan Saunders implement the new offensive system, it is clear that quality shooters are essential to maintaining an efficient offense on a nightly basis. The Wolves did not have a chance (or the money) to sign a big-time shooter like Klay Thompson or Kevin Durant this offseason. However, the Timberwolves could have taken their chances on some lesser-named unrestricted free agents that have the ability to shoot the ball at a high clip.
Seth Curry is a career 43.4% three-point shooter and would have provided the Wolves with quality shooting from the guard position.
Old friend Wayne Ellington, who was selected by the Timberwolves in the 2009 NBA Draft, is also a quality shooter that Minnesota could have targeted this summer in order to add some shooting from the wing.
Another shooter that was on the market as an unrestricted free agent was Reggie Bullock, who instead signed with the New York Knicks. Bullock would also provide much-needed shooting from the wing in place of Treveon Graham.
Unfortunately with the Timberwolves’ cap figure this summer, they would have not been able to sign any these players without negatively affecting the rest of the roster. With the plethora of small one-year contracts and Jeff Teague’s $19 million coming off the books, the Wolves will have more flexibility next summer to add quality shooting to the team in free agency or via trade.
