Minnesota Timberwolves 7 most heartbreaking moments of the year
2. Jarrett Culver’s performance
Draft night is an exciting time of year for every NBA fan. With all of the players available and promise for the future, teams like to trade picks to either move up to select someone they are high on or to move down to gain other assets.
Gersson Rosas and the front office of the Minnesota Timberwolves did the former by trading the number 11 pick and Dario Šarić to Phoenix for the number six pick where they selected Jarrett Culver.
Culver was a promising prospect coming out of Texas Tech. He had just played in the NCAA National Championship game against Virginia in his sophomore season and declared for the draft soon after.
"“His scoring and passing will only shine more in a faster-paced NBA system, and his knack for drawing fouls will be a great asset as well … Culver may not dazzle you with elite athletic ability, but from a skill standpoint, he’s got a great foundation in which to build.”, said David Ray of NBADraft.net."
Culver was a consensus top-10 pick and was viewed as someone with a ton of upside coming into the NBA.
However, Culver has not lived up to his expectations and many fans are becoming restless.
He has been a very inefficient player thus far into his career averaging 7.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 36.2% from the field, 24% from three, and an abysmal 41.4% from the free throw line.
It is not surprising that fans are upset with Culver’s play this season. As the sample size grows and the stats plateau, Culver’s support diminishes.
Though it might be too early to consider him a lost cause, it is not too early to become concerned.
Hopefully his shooting percentages increase as the season goes along. Signs from his play in college point to that being true, but it has yet to be seen in the NBA.
For fans who were ecstatic about having a high-profile prospect, Culver’s play has been nothing short of heartbreaking.
