Minnesota Timberwolves: Ranking the decade’s No. 1 overall picks by potential
No. 1 – Zion Williamson, New Orleans Pelicans, 2019
The Pelicans selected Zion Williamson as the number-one overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Zion burst onto the scene in his first game against the Spurs, scoring 17 consecutive points in the fourth quarter and putting the league on notice going 4-of-4 from deep during that stretch.
Zion averaged 23.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 0.8 steals per game. What’s impressive about those stats is that he did it playing 29 minutes a game while shooting 59 percent from the field. Zion also set the record for most consecutive games of 20-plus points as a teenager with 13.
Zion is a freak of nature, and if he can become a durable player meaning playing over 80 games a year on a consistent basis, he will become one of the best players today’s game sooner rather than later.
At 19 years old there is plenty of room to grow, but Zion has shown what he is capable of and we will get to see his team making a run at the postseason come July 30 in Orlando.
Overall Outlook
The Timberwolves have been in contention for the first-overall pick for what feels like the past decade. Towns was the Wolves’ pick at No. 1 in 2015 and is the key to the franchise’s future. KAT ultimately signed a max deal, keeping him under contract until 2024.
Although Andrew Wiggins was the star the Timberwolves were hoping for, Minnesota faithful are hoping that the Timberwolves will be better off with D’Angelo Russell. The Timberwolves have a bright future ahead of them and that is because of the NBA draft lottery.
The lottery is set for Aug. 20, and the Timberwolves have a 14 percent chance of landing the first selection. In that case, we’ll all be rooting for whoever is ultimately selected to top the list of the next decade’s worth of No. 1-overall picks.
