Who are affordable players to acquire that would help the Minnesota Timberwolves improve?

Barring the emergence of a ‘bubble’ for a teams left out the NBA’s Orlando season restart, the Minnesota Timberwolves’ 2019-20 season is over.

With the end of the season comes time for the front office to review the teams’ financial situation in order to identify opportunities to improve.

The Timberwolves’ salary cap situation has a lot of variables in play, including the restricted free agency of Malik Beasley and Juancho Hernangomez. Along with cap space, the Timberwolves have the following exceptions to use, although the exact value isn’t quite clear as of yet, but both Basketball Insiders and Spotrac effectively have the same information.

  • Trade Exception: Treveon Graham — $228,505
  • Trade Exception: Jeff Teague — $500,000
  • Trade Exception: Gorgui Dieng — $879,813
  • Estimated Mid-Level Exception — $9,755,000
  • Estimated Bi-Annual Exception — $3,818,000

The ones to focus on, of course, are the latter two, as those are the ones that players can be signed into in free agency. The three trade exceptions can only be used as part of a trade.

With these factors in mind, it is entirely possible that Gersson Rosas will need to hunt for affordable options in free agency to help improve the team for 2020-21.

Let’s look at four players that may be beneficial to the Timberwolves — not to mention coming with low price tags.
